The Hemingway Daiquiri
What do you think of when you hear someone ordering a daiquiri? I always had in my head a slushy, fruity drink you usually get poolside while on vacation somewhere warm. Little did I know that isn’t a true daiquiri. It’s a simple, classic cocktail. Believed to have its origins in Cuba, this daiquiri is named for the beach that was nearby. Daiquiris are considered sours and there are multiple ways you can make this cocktail. While I do love the traditional style daiquiri (rum, lime, and simple syrup), I’ve really enjoyed the Hemingway version lately. The drink got it’s name from Ernest Hemingway, as he was known to ask for this version of daiquiri because he didn’t like the sugar syrup it was traditionally made with.
Key Ingredients for the Hemingway Daiquiri
Rum - a good white rum like Don Q or The Real McCoy are great options
Maraschino Liqueur- this is a clear, cherry liqueur that has some sweetness to it
Fresh grapefruit juice - depending on how tart your grapefruit is, you may also want to add a dash of simple syrup.
Lime juice - freshly squeezed is best
Step-by-Step Instructions
Combine rum, lime and grapefruit juice, and maraschino in a cocktail shaker.
Fill with ice and shake until well chilled (15-20 seconds)
Strain into Coupe glass
Garnish with brandied cherry.
