Cocktail Hour: The Sidecar

Illustration of sidecar cocktail in a coupe glass with lemon twist garnish

The sidecar is a classic cocktail believed to have been created in the 1910’s in London and has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years. They’re like a margarita but made with cognac or brandy. In my twenties, my friends and I were regulars at Table of Contents (any else remember this wonderful place?) for their happy hour and they made the BEST sidecar. It really was the perfect end to the work day. Years later, I would frequent Nye’s in NE for their sidecars. If Corky made it for you, BONUS (his were fantastic). With Spring trying to make it’s entrance, it’s a great time to bring this cocktail back into rotation.

Key Ingredients for the Perfect Sidecar:

  • Good cognac or brandy. Use a VSOP if you can. Note: All cognacs are brandy, but not all brandy’s are cognac. Cognac is from grapes in a specific region of France, similar to how champagne can only be called champagne when it’s from Champagne, France.

  • Cointreau or any other orange liqueur you prefer like Grand Marnier or curacao.

  • Lemon juice - fresh is best

  • Rich simple syrup - this is made with a ratio of 2 sugar to 1 water vs the simple syrup ratio of 1 to 1.

Step-by-Step Instructions for making a Sidecar:

  1. Fill cocktail shaker with ice

  2. Add all ingredients to shaker

  3. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds

  4. Strain into coup glass

  5. Garnish with lemon twist and enjoy!
