Swedish Cinnamon Bun Day

Today, the delightful scent of cinnamon fills the air across Sweden because it’s Cinnamon Bun Day! A day celebrated annually on October 4. The delightfully delicious buns have a day dedicated to them and, quite frankly, it’s one of my favorite Swedish celebrations. And it’s taken very seriously. You will see cinnamon buns everywhere - offices will have them for employees, schools for their students, restaurants will offer them that normally don't, you get the idea.

Cinnamon Bun day dates back to 1999 and has roots in the post-WWI era, becoming an essential classic in the 1950’s. Cinnamon buns quickly became the most popular pairing with Fika (a cherished coffee break ingrained in Swedish life since the 18th century). I mean what goes better with coffee than a cinnamon bun?

On this special day, an estimated ten million cinnamon buns will be enjoyed, nearly matching the country’s population. It’s a celebration that no one wants to miss!

Want to try you hand at making them at home? They’re fairly straightforward and I like this recipe.
