My Favorite Running Gear

Running is more than just exercise for me; it's a lifestyle. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I’ve been a runner for most of my life. I first experienced that runner’s high in 7th grade, and I’ve been hooked ever since. However, the last two years have been a struggle as I’ve battled sciatica from a herniated disc in my lower back. This is the longest period I’ve gone without running, but I’m thrilled to report that I am slowly returning to the sport I LOVE.

My GOAL: To complete the 2025 Bridge Run next June - a 1/2 marathon that starts in Denmark and crosses over the Øresund bridge to Malmö. I’ve mapped out a running program that allows ample time to reach that distance with minimal stress on my body. Don’t worry, I’ve still got my support team, including a physical therapist, chiropractor, and bodywork specialist (think dry needling, cupping, and sports massage) to help me stay injury free.

With that said, I realized my workout gear was looking a bit worn and outdated. I hadn’t invested in new gear since before the pandemic! How did that happen? Having the right gear can make all the difference in comfort, performance, and confidence. So, I’m excited to share my favorite running gear that helps me hit the pavement with style and efficiency. From shoes that feel like clouds to jackets that beat the wind, these are my go-to items for every run.

Hoka Clifton 9 Running Shoes

Hokas are known for their lightweight design and superior cushioning. I was torn between the Clifton and the Bondi but ultimately chose the Clifton. These shoes offer the perfect balance of support and comfort, making long runs feel effortless. If you prefer extra cushion, the Bondi might be a better fit for you. Given my history of lower back pain and the need to run longer distances, the Clifton was the ideal choice for me.

Why I Love Them: These are my go-to shoes right now. I’ve been wearing them for a few years primarily for walking, but switching to running has made me love them even more. The cushioning absorbs impact, while the breathable mesh keeps my feet cool. I’m partial to the black color, but they come in a variety of fun colors, allowing you to really express your style.

H&M Training Tights

These H&M training tights are a blend of functionality and style. They are high-waisted with a wide waist band, providing the right amount of compression while allowing full range of motion.

Why I Love Them: They stay up. Yes, you read that right - they stay up! I can’t tell you how many running tights I’ve bought over the years that do not stay in place, forcing me to constantly tug at them. I’ve discovered that training or studio tights work better for me than traditional running tights. Whether it’s the compression, the stretch, or the cut, these tights do the trick. I liked them so much I bought five(!) of them.

Under Armour ColdGear Long Sleeve Shirt

When the weather cools down, the Under Armour ColdGear long sleeve shirt becomes a staple in my running wardrobe. It provides warmth without bulk.

Why I Love It: This shirt is perfect for layering, and its moisture-wicking fabric ensures I stay dry, even during intense runs. I’ve been wearing these for years. While they’ve changed their fit some over the years, I still find these to be the best.

H&M Sports Bra

A good sports bra is essential for any workout, and the H&M sports bra provides excellent support without sacrificing comfort.

Why I Love It: I love the longer length of this sports bra, making it almost like a top with built-in support. It keeps everything in place without feeling restrictive. It’s affordable, comfortable, and stylish. Now, if only designers would realize we hate those removable cups—either stitch them in or leave them out! Nothing frustrates me more than constantly readjusting them after washing.

Lululemon Another Mile Jacket

The Lululemon Another Mile jacket is designed to withstand the elements. It’s lightweight, wind-resistant, and has a flattering fit.

Why I Love It: While I don’t have this exact model, the version I have is similar from many years ago that’s a slipover style. I love that it’s wind-proof, water proof, and offers the warmth of a puffer without the bulk. The stretch material allows the jacket to move with you. It’s perfect for those unpredictable weather days and stylish enough to wear casually.

FlipBelt

The FlipBelt is a sleek and efficient way to carry essentials like your phone, keys, and cards when you don’t have any pockets.

Why I Love It: Sometimes I wear a jacket or sweatshirt tied around my waist just so I have a pocket for my phone and keys while running. This belt eliminates the need for that, and I often forget I even have it on. It stays in place, doesn’t bounce, and has enough space for all the necessities without being bulky. I also love that it has a hook to securely attach your keys.

H&M Sport Socks with Black Stripe

I’ll admit these aren’t my typical choice for socks - I’m more a no-show sock girl. But apparently, that’s not cool anymore?!? These H&M sport socks offer the perfect blend of comfort and style with their cushioned soles and minimalist design.

Why I Love Them: They’re soft, supportive, and the black stripe adds a touch of style to my running outfit. I also like wearing them with casual wear when I want to add a sporty vibe to my look—think skirts with sneakers.

Quilted All In Motion Running Baseball Hat

The quilted All In Motion running baseball hat is perfect for cooler days and keeping hair out of your face.

Why I Love It: I found this hat at Target a few years back, and it’s been perfect for those in-between seasons when a beanie is too hot but a regular baseball hat isn’t quite enough. Bonus: it’s waterproof. While I don’t think they make it anymore, you can find a similar styles here.

With the right gear, every run can be more enjoyable and effective. Each of these items has earned its place in my routine for their functionality, comfort, and style. Whether you're just starting out or looking to upgrade your running wardrobe, these picks are sure to enhance your experience. What are some of your favorite running items?
