6 Must-Have Coat Styles for Fall
The minute the calendar flips to September I’m all about my fall wardrobe. Sweaters, coats, boots, knit hats, etc - Bring.Them.On. The temps may not always be on my side for this type of dressing, but I’m ready nonetheless. And with fall being such a fickle time to dress for, it’s good to have a few options to get you through the season. Whether you’re heading to work, running to the gym, walking the dog, meeting friends out for dinner, or just running errands, these coats will help you do it in style.
Now style isn’t the only reason to have a variety of coats. Function is important too. If you live anywhere where the weather can change on the drop of a hat, it’s important to have coats the address these changes. There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!
Below I’ve broken out each of my go to winter styles. I’ve also included a few ways to wear each coat to give you inspiration. Find the looks that work for you and take the elements you love.
The Over-sized Denim Jacket
Why I Love it: Timeless and versatile, perfect for layering, great transition from summer to fall.
Styling Tips: Works well with all dresses and skirts. Throw on over leggings and a tshirt/button down, add a pair of flats and you’ve elevated your casual wear. Wear with a pair of trousers, a button down or sweater, and add some sneakers and you’ve added a bit of chill to an otherwise business like look.
Some styles to try: H&M, Khaite (splurge, but oh so good!), Anthropologie, Madewell
The Nylon Bomber Jacket
Why I Love it: Warm and sporty, it’s a vintage classic that can be dressed up or down.
Styling Tips: I love to wear this with jeans. You can also pair over a skirt and sweater to make them look more casual.
Some styles to try: Reversible Bomber, HM, ASOS
The Long Puffer Vest
Why I Love it: The perfect layering piece - it works well on it’s own for those in between temps, but also works well as a second layer worn over a wool coat for those extra cold days. I love the longer length to keep you warm when necessary.
Styling Tips: I love this over a sweater and jeans. Great with athleisure wear or layered over chunky knitwear. It’s also a great piece to wear going to and from the gym - keeps you warm when you’re done, but not overheated.
The Trench Coat
Why I Love it: It’s a classic for a reason! It works with everything. Whether you prefer the classic style, something more modern, or oversized, this is an easy style to add into your closet and will get lots of wear.
Styling Tips: Pair with jeans, sweater, and boots for a casual everyday vibe. Works well over work wear and adds a bit of modernity and polish while still being chill.
The Extra Warm Parka
The Plaid Wool Coat
Why I Love it: My favorite is designed like an oversized shirt and it looks just as good with jeans as it does dresses and skirts. It’s the perfect fall into winter coat before the temps drop drastically. I also prefer a print to a basic black as it adds a bit more flair.
Styling Tips: Perfect for layering over sweaters or pairing with skirts for a laid-back, stylish look.
Some styles to try: Sezane, Levis, Isabel Marant
