Easy DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday—it's all about the candy and costumes! As a kid, I was all about the candy (especially candy corn, my personal favorite and a very polarizing candy!). But as I got older, it became all about the costumes. Every year, I’ve explored new themes: from group costumes to solo ideas that span from spooky to funny. Over the years, I've dressed up as Daphne from Scooby Doo with friends, a pirate’s wench (with Ramesh as my pirate!), and even Octomom! What’s been your favorite Halloween costume? 🎃

This year in Sweden, I’m pulling together a last-minute costume and it got me thinking of all the quick and easy ways you can dress up for Halloween. Below I’ve pulled together easy DIY costume ideas from Wes Anderson characters to Alice in Wonderland and Halloween classics like Wednesday Addams. Read on to see how to create your own DIY costumes below:

Characters from Wes Anderson Films:

  1. Margot Tenenbaum: Faux Fur coat, polo shirt dress, loafers, heavy coal lined eyes, barrett holding hair back and gloves.

  2. Mrs. Fox: makeup like a fox (youtube has a lot of tutorials) or you could get a fox mask, yellow dress, and fur gloves.

  3. Juliette from The French Dispatch: plaid mini skirt, tights, boots and a leather jacket. If you’ve got a ski helmet, bike helmet, or scooter helmet use that, find some googles to go with it

  4. Suzy from Moonrise Kingdom: short collared dress in neutral tones, , knee high socks, wicker bag or suitcase and don’t forget binoculars

  5. Agatha from The Grand Budapest Hotel: peach or tan dress and waist apron, add a birthmark to your face with makeup, maybe a bit of flour dusting as well, you could even add a box of pastries with Mendels on the box.

Alice in Wonderland Characters:

  1. Cheshire Cat - Striped tights, tutu, body suit, cheshire smile mask, cat ears

  2. White Rabbit: Rabbit ears, large clock, sneakers, printed tights.

  3. Mad Hatter: Colorful, mismatched outfit, top hat, crazy wig, and tea cup.

  4. Alice: Light blue dress, white apron, striped or white tights. Top off with a wig and headband

  5. Queen of Hearts: Cape, funky tights, flared skirt, crazy hair wig, crown, heart accessory.

Halloween Classics:

  1. Wednesday Addams: Black dress, braids, collar. You can even accessorize with an octopus or hand (and call it Thing). Don’t forget to use make up to make yourself really pale.

  2. Bride of Frankenstein: Teased hair with white streaks is KEY! Use bandages wrapped around your arms, white gown or even sheets draped on you if in a pinch for the dress. For make up, mix up a light green/white base and make sure to make your eyes dark and have a bold red lip.

  3. Lily Munster: Green-tinged makeup, goth clothing, lavender dress if possible. Add a black wig, sprayed with white stripes

Wizard of Oz Characters:

  1. Scarecrow: Denim or natural-toned clothes, add hay accents. You could even use a burlap bag and belt it like a dress with hay coming out of it.

  2. Dorothy: Red shoes (I prefer converse high tops!) , blue skirt/dress, white apron, braided hair, basket with stuffed dog.

  3. Tin Woman: Silver or sequin outfit, red heart detail, metal funnel hat. Get creative with this one! Anything sparkly silver or sequin would be perfect -dress or pants. If you wear a dress, pin a red heart on your chest. Otherwise wear a tshirt with a red heart on it or simply draw one with marker (obviously make sure it’s a shirt you don’t mind drawing on). For the tin hat, use a large, metal funnel and turn it upside down.

  4. Cowardly Lion: Brown clothing (love uggs for the shoes), fur accents, ears headband, whisker makeup.

With these 17 easy costume ideas, there’s no need to stress about last-minute plans. I hope this inspires you to get creative! What are your Halloween costume plans? Let me know in the comments! 🎃👻And finally, the Wizard of OZ characters.
